He sat on his bed, playing with the gray ball he had been given as one of his few toys. He watched it emotionless. It was a ball. It was gray. It had no emotions. Was he a ball? He knew he wasn't. He looked like a human, but he had wings. So…he couldn't be a ball right? Rico dropped the ball and watched as it rolled off his bed before rolling into a wall. He grew bored and took his gray bottle filled with his special juice. He drank it slowly and calmly. The adults told him the juice was to help him grow big and strong and keep him from hurting himself. So he drank it quite often.

The door opened and the scientist stepped in the room.

"Ok Rico. Time to test your abilities again," he said.

Rico nodded, still void of emotion. He got up and slowly made his way out of the room. The scientist walked down the halls and Rico followed him. As he walked he watched the aliens that passed by him. They were all surrounded by a blue cloud of mist. The color showed that they were sad, lonely, scared. Rico felt nothing. No pity, no sadness, no fear. He followed the scientist calmly.

The two entered the room. It was all white and blank. In the middle of it were a table and two chairs. The scientist looked at Rico and pointed to one side.

"You stand there. Remember? We've done this test multiple times. I'm confident in your abilities to help us keep our next test subject calm and collect. Ready?" he asked.

Rico nodded. He was always ready. His special juice helped keep him ready for anything. The scientist nodded and sat in one of the chairs.

"Come in," he said.

Another scientist, a male, came through the door. He seemed utterly confused as to why he was there. He closed the door and sat down. The two had a conversation to which Rico zoned out of. All he concentrated on was the emotions of the second scientist. Eventually, the scientist's mist grew red in anger.

"YOU CAN'T FIRE ME! JUST BECAUSE THAT EXPERIMENT HASN'T BEEN PRODUCTIVE IN A FEW DAYS DOESN'T MEAN IT'S A DEAD END!" he shouted.

The first scientist looked at Rico, who took the hint and stared at the second scientist. He focused on the scientist and radiated his energy towards him. Seconds later the second scientist's mist became a light yellow of calm.

"You know what?....I don't mind this. I can take a vacation and get a normal job," said the second scientist with a light happy smile.

The first scientist smirked and chuckled.

"Indeed you can," he replied.

The second scientist stood up and walked out of the room, still looking happy and calm. The first scientist looked at Rico and gave him a wide smile.

"Very good Rico! That was amazing! It took you no time at all to get him calm and happy! How about later we give you some extra ice cream for your dessert?"

Rico nodded lightly, still void of any emotion. The two headed for Rico's room. In front of his room stood an elderly woman with white hair and many wrinkles holding a tray of food. She was smiling as she saw Rico head for her.

"Welcome back sweety! I have your lunch!" she said.

"Marie you take care of him now. I have tests I have to run for some aliens. I'll be back in in around four hours to clip his wings," he said before leaving.

Marie nodded before heading into Rico's room with the boy. Rico sat down on his bed as Marie handed him the tray. On it was a turkey sandwich, a carton of milk, some BBQ chips and peas.

"Remember to eat all your peas. Otherwise no dessert," she reminded him as she closed the door.

Rico nodded and ate all his food in silence. As he ate she strolled over to him and ran her fingers through his wings. It wasn't unusual for her to do so. As far as he knew she was his biggest friend. He had no parents after all and she was the closest thing to a grandmother he had. All he knew about his heritage was that he was from Rio de Janeiro and his mother had died giving birth to him.

"Rico…I want you to do something for me," she said after he had finished his sandwich.

Rico looked at her and nodded. He felt something one would know as curiosity.

"If something ever happens where you're outside and I can't find you, then you go east…do you know where east is?" she asked.

Rico nodded. His instincts always knew which way was east, north, south and west. He needed no compass and no sun. He just always knew. Rico pointed east for her to indicate which way east was. Marie smiled.

"Good."

Once Rico was finished his lunch she took the tray and left. Rico wondered what she meant by "something happens". He shrugged it off and took his ball again. He threw it against the wall and watched as it bounced back before catching it. He looked at his wings. They were still gray, as always. He saw a twinge of blue though. He blinked in confusion and his wings went completely blue. His eyes went wide as they did. He felt something wet at his eyes and he tried to wipe them away. What was going on?! His heart started to beat fast and his breath became quick. He went to grab his juice, but the juice was gone. Where had it gone? Did Marie take it?! Rico heard himself whimper and sob. The water had gone down his face in streams and showed sign of stopping. Was he sick? What was wrong with him? He had seen people do this before, but he had never any idea why.

A loud sound came to his ears as his door came off its hinges and flew into the wall across from where it had stood before. Smoke billowed through the doorway and a figure came through Rico couldn't see due to the smoke and the water from his eyes. He wiped his eyes to see it was Marie again, covered in soot in random places.

"Rico sweety! Come with me!" she said before picking him up and carrying him out of the room.

Marie ran as fast as her fragile legs could take her. Rico clung to her tightly, the water still pouring out from his eyes. He felt bad emotions that he could not control and he knew he didn't like it.

As she ran Rico could see scientist running the other direction. They were all covered in blue mists of confusion and fear. The mists ran together and became blurry as the water ran out of his eyes again. Ten minutes later he saw a lot of green. What was this stuff? Was it the trees and grass? He had been outside before, but it was never for long. There was also never without a fence to keep all the non-humans inside. Rico could see no fence and there were many many trees. Rico looked at Marie, who was sweating from running and holding Rico.

Rico heard a gunshot and Marie stopped running. Her face had become panic stricken and she fell to the ground on her knees. Rico got out of her grip and watched as her eyes rolled back into their sockets. She fell right on top of him, pinning him to the ground. Rico struggled to get unstuck. He saw from behind the two of them was the scientist from before, the one who was fired. He had a smirk on his face.

"No one controls my emotions you freak," he grinned before pointing the gun at Rico.

Rico quickly removed himself from under Marie and ran towards the woods that surrounded the building. He could sense that he was running east, just like Marie said to. A gunshot went off and Rico could feel pain radiate through his wing and shoulder. Water went down his face again and he kept running as fast as he could.

"I'LL FIND AND KILL YOU SOONER OR LATER YOU RUNT!" he shouted, "YOU WON'T LAST LONG BY YOURSELF!"

Rico kept running and running until the ex-scientist's shouts became muffled and unclear. Rico stopped after a while and panted. He looked at his wing the best he could. It was completely blue, except for his right wing. There, near his right shoulder was red. Why was it red? He touched the redness, which spread to his fingers. Rico smelled it lightly before cringing. It was blood. He was bleeding!

Rico felt his heart race faster than it was before. More water ran down his face non-stop. He heard another whimper and a sob come from his mouth. He fell to the ground and he convulsed uncontrollably. What was wrong with him?! He could always control other people's emotions! He had never to control his! Why was this happening?! The ex-scientist was right. If he couldn't control his own emotions than there was no way he was going to be able to survive by himself.

Rico heard a twig snap and he quickly got up. He could feel his heart stop as he turned towards the sound.

A teenage boy around 17 stepped out from the bushes. His hair was a sandy blonde color, as was his eyes. The boy's mist was blue in confusion.

"Hello?" he said.

Rico whimpered and scrambled to get away from the teenager. Rico felt pain shoot through his wing and shoulder as he bumped into a tree. The teenager held his hands up slowly to show he meant no harm.

"Hello there little fella. My name is Sandy…I'm like you," he said before showing very large sandy colored wings.

Rico felt his eyes go wide in awe. He had never seen someone like him before.

"Is your name Rico?" the boy asked pointing to Rico's soccer jersey that had his name on it and the number 7.

Rico nodded lightly.

"Can you talk? Can you tell me what happened?" he asked.

Rico bit his lip. He had never a reason to talk before. He knew how, but the scientists never wanted him. Talking took emotion, and he had none before. Rico shook his head no. Sandy sighed lightly and carefully picked Rico up.

"Well then…how about I find you some shelter and clean up that wound hm?" he asked.

Rico felt the water in his eyes pour down his face again. Rico clung to Sandy and buried his face into Sandy's shoulder. He sobbed hard as Sandy carefully rubbed his back.

"Don't worry buddy…I'll help you out. And if you can't talk to me then I think my friend Akiko can help us out with that. Ok? Now let's go. You'll be safe with me," he said as he walked eastward.

Rico nodded lightly. He could feel something coming out of his nose. He sniffed hard so that it didn't come out. He cuddled close to Sandy. Something about him felt very safe. Rico felt his eyes droop and fell asleep, confident that he was going to be safe from now on.
